“I’m a Fire-Starter, a Twirling Fire-Starter”..!

A huge part of travelling is all about experiencing the unexpected, trying something new and doing things you wouldn’t normally do in the ‘real world’, so when we were asked whether we wanted to play with fire we decided to ignore all those childhood warnings and just say Yes!

We were staying with Richard’s sister in Highett, near Melbourne, and had spent the evening at her local pool club (Fast Eddie’s). We decided that we’d make the most of the balmy night by lighting a fire and sitting in the garden for a while. Unknown to us, Richard’s sister Sarah and her other half Markus had an exciting yet ever so dangerous hobby – Fire Twirling – so they treated us to a little demonstration. We sat in the back garden, put on some dance tunes and cranked up the base, before sitting back and watching as Markus put on a mesmerising show!

[singlepic id=4037 w=520 h=440 float=center]I have to say; fire-twirling was one of the highlights of our stay in Melbourne – the sound of the fire balls as they ‘whooooshed’ past our ears, coupled with the beats of the music, was strangely hypnotic and the colours and shapes as they moved through the air were mesmerising! We never wanted the night to end and could have easily stayed up all night, practising the moves.

We sat in the garden until around 4am, just watching the fire until in burned out –acutely aware of the sounds of Australia around us. The bats and possums kept us company until we couldn’t keep our eyes open any longer and eventually stumbled off to bed.

Thank you so much to both Sarah and Markus who gave us one of our most memorable moments! We may have even picked up a new hobby! 😉
