Guest Post: Mallorca’s Hidden Gems

Time for this Friday’s guest post from our friends at MyDestinationInfo, with an insight into one of Europe’s most overlooked islands…

A destination that is often misconstrued; with its superfluous package holidays and purpose built resorts to cater for the masses, Mallorca (or Majorca as foreigners have coined it) and its ‘Sun, Sea and Sand’ culture of the ‘fly and flop’ holiday, often isn’t appreciated enough for its other attributes. Hiking, secluded beaches, mountain ranges and a selection of top restaurants are just some of the island’s charms waiting to be discovered.

The largest and most popular island in the Baleares, Mallorca is a Spanish island with a privileged location in the Mediterranean – bringing glorious year-round weather. Although many of Mallorca’s beaches have been slightly engulfed by the booming tourism industry, there are still some hidden gems to be found – especially on the South coast where the area is mountainous and you are likely to find hidden coves and bays to explore. If you are a fan of hiking, the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range that runs along the North West coast is pure escapism from the packed beaches and especially in off-season provides a breathtaking, rugged backdrop to an early morning hike.

If you fancy a spot of lunch on the way, the village of Lloseta is a gastro lover’s delight with restaurants such as Santi Taura and Celler Can Carrossa providing fresh, seasonal food and alfresco dining. Advanced booking is recommended.

Accommodation in Mallorca is certainly not sparse. There are of course the plethora of high rise 3* and 4* hotels to choose from if you are looking for a cheap alternative. However, the choice of 5* luxury Mallorca hotels certainly isn’t slim. For example, Hotel La Residencia situated in the rural village of Deia, has won awards for its Spa and is set in 30 acres of olive and citrus groves making for the ultimate in luxury. If a large hotel isn’t quite what you are looking for then there is still more to choose from with rural retreats, (fincas) boutique hotels and villas. Finca Es Castell is one of the prettiest boutique hotels the island has to offer and it’s far from the maddening crowds and nightlife. Beautifully decorated and with traditional dry stone walls, this really is a chic country retreat.

For a real taste of opulence with a contemporary twist, Portals Vells Luxury Villa near the town of Calma Vinyes has it all; but with a price tag to match
